29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life

29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life Review

When Cami Walker, a young, active newlywed, was diagnosed with MS, the bottom fell out from her life. After struggling with the disease (and not winning) for several years, a friend and spiritual mentor gave her a "prescription"- give away 29 gifts, one for each day.

"29 Gifts" is the account of Walker's 29 days of Giving, one brief chapter (about 2-4 pages) per day. As she gives her gifts, the rewards are surprising.

This book is very thought provoking, but also a little bit frustrating. I have a spinal disease, so I could identify with many of Walker's struggles, but not her reactions to them. And a lot of her "gifts" were things that I sort of associate with good manners - handing someone a tissue when they are crying, calling a relative, "allowing" people to do things for her. It was only the middle of the book that I understand that such simple gifts meant a great deal because of the *thought* and *intention* of the gift. I wish that had been spelled out sooner.

Regardless, this book is a wonderful push for all of us to make very big changes in our world by simply giving more of ourselves (and the small things we have- a shoulder to lean on, a little bit of time, a cup of tea, and yes, even a tissue) to others who need it. Yes, it *is* a spiritual book, but we've got to remember that "spirituality" is not limited to those who have committed themselves to a particular organized religion- spirituality is available to any of us who wish to offer our own gifts to those around us.

29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life Overview

At age thirty-five, Cami Walker was burdened by an intensified struggle with multiple sclerosis, a chronic neurological disease that left her debilitated and depressed. Then she received an uncommon “prescription” from South African healer Mbali Creazzo: Give away 29 gifts in 29 days.

29 Gifts is the insightful story of the author’s life change as she embraces and reflects on the naturally reciprocal process of giving. Many of Walker’s gifts were simple—a phone call, spare change, a Kleenex. Yet the acts were transformative. By Day 29, not only had Walker’s health and happiness improved, but she had created a worldwide giving movement. 29 Gifts shows how a simple, daily practice of altruism can dramatically alter your outlook on the world.
